Crow Papers
Crow Papers

Crow Papers.

Installation at Crow Recycling, Hillfields, Coventry, commissioned for Coventry Artspace and Coventry City of Culture Artist On My Street programme, to bring art to suburban areas surrounding Coventry which had not previously hosted City of Culture events.

Crow Recycling is a community enterprise. They act as a hub for donated materials. They are a great resource for makers and schools and also provide recycling services for businesses and work experience. Their neighbours on a small industrial estate opposite a line of terraced housing are other recycling-industry companies. It is a quiet neighbourhood, but the sort of place you could find the occasional sofa stranded on the pavement.

Although it is deprived, Hillfields has warmth in the way of colourful murals, graffitti, well-used green spaces and mature trees. It was autumn when I visited, and I was struck by all the yellow maple leaves on the ground as well as the sparkle of shattered car window glazing, giving evidence to precarity in the ownership of possessions.
